Question about changing internal volume.

Hello everyone, is it possible to make the rear chamber volume of cabinets smaller than the way the manufacturer originally built them? Specifically, can 817,s and 815,s and 816,s rear volume be made smaller to accomodate the use of other woofers?

The 815 is a sealed design, so no problem. The 816/817 have fixed vents, so as rear chamber Vb is reduced, the cab's Fb will rise also. Hopefully, damping or plugging one or more vents will solve any potential tuning issues.

Thats what I thought. It isnt as simple as just changing the volume of the cabs rear chamber.

You can somewhat cheat on the volume by stuffing it with polyfill or equivalent. It changes the acoustic impedence of the enclosure. I used to have a curve of the effects as a funtion of density but can't find it. If you have the means to measure the reosnant frequency of the box you can adjust it by varying the stuffing amount. If I remember right, about the most you can do is increase the apparent volume by about 15 to 20%.

Hmm, according to JimD, the new 416 might the answer, and would allow me to not have to do anything other than install the drivers in my cabinets!

Looking for that Altec low freqeuncy sound that only Altec had, at least in my opinion.
